How to Train Your Dragon Live-Action Cast Confirmed

DreamWorks' popular animated film 'How to Train Your Dragon' is entering full-fledged live-action production. While production was indefinitely postponed due to the Hollywood strike, director Dean DeBlois has announced that filming began in mid-August.

This film is based on the first installment of the animated series and will depict Hiccup and Toothless's first encounter. Director Dean DeBlois also directed the animated trilogy.

American actor Mason Thames (born 2007) will play the protagonist, 'Hiccup'. He first landed a lead role in Scott Derrickson's 2021 film 'The Black Phone,' the director of 'Doctor Strange' (2016). This is his first appearance in a Hollywood blockbuster.

Hiccup attempts dragon hunting to become a legendary Viking. However, after bringing down a dragon of the 'Night Fury' species, he becomes friends with it. The friendship between Hiccup and the Night Fury, named 'Toothless,' is a crucial theme throughout the series.

Astrid will be portrayed by English actress Nico Parker (born 2004). She recently showcased great chemistry with Pedro Pascal as 'Ellie' in HBO's hit TV series 'The Last of Us'.

In the original film, Astrid initially appeared to be a rival to Hiccup, but eventually develops into a romantic interest. While Hiccup is depicted as not particularly talented as a Viking, Astrid is portrayed as an exceptional warrior.

Gerard Butler will play Hiccup's father and Viking chieftain, Stoick the Vast. He also voiced the same character in the original animated film. We can expect to hear Stoick's signature voice in the live-action film as well.

In fact, Gerard Butler's most famous work is '300' (2007), the film that propelled Zack Snyder to fame. He played King Leonidas, the protagonist of the film.

Nick Frost, known for his roles in films like 'Shaun of the Dead,' will portray Gobber the Belch, Stoick's closest friend and Hiccup's mentor. Like Stoick, he is depicted as a father figure to Hiccup.

DreamWorks' live-action film 'How to Train Your Dragon' is aiming for a March 14, 2025 release.
