Paramount+ original film "Star Trek: Section 31" has begun filming. The film will star Michelle Yeoh (known as Yang Zi-jing in Korea) as "Philippa Georgiou." Originally, the film was planned as a TV series in 2019. However, it seems that the TV series with an Asian woman as the main character did not receive enough investment, as there was no news for over four years.

Michelle's Star Trek project gained traction in 2023. In 2022, "Everything Everywhere All at Once" became a global box office hit, and Michelle Yeoh won the Academy Award for Best Actress. A few months after the Academy Awards, in April 2023, Paramount finally provided an update on the project's progress. They decided to produce the series as a Paramount+ original film and release it in 2025.

Michelle Yeoh has already played the same character in "Star Trek: Discovery" in 2017. Philippa Georgiou was originally the mentor of the main character Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), but a malicious version of Philippa from the multiverse took her place.

In the TV series, Michelle Yeoh played both Philippa's, showcasing impressive action scenes. The evil version of Philippa was particularly well-received for her charisma and her multifaceted nature, being a villain but also helping the protagonist.

Section 31 deals with the evil Georgiou's activities as an agent of the "Section 31" intelligence agency of the Federation. In "Discovery" season 3, Philippa Georgiou traveled to the future 1000 years later through time travel, but for some reason returned to the present, leaving the protagonists behind.

The film is directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, who directed episodes of "Star Trek: Discovery" with Philippa Georgiou at the center. Alex Kurtzman and other producers from "Discovery" are also participating in this film.

Filming for "Star Trek: Section 31" is expected to last about six weeks, beginning on January 30th.
