Contains spoilers for Squid Game Season 1 and potential spoilers for Season 2.
A very short teaser and stills for Netflix's hit show Squid Game Season 2 have been released. It was a very short clip of Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), who decided to stay in Korea in Season 1, making a phone call and saying, "I will find them."
Stills and posters featuring various cast members have also been released. The stills raise several questions about Squid Game Season 2. First, Gi-hun, who is back for Season 2, is shown with an uneasy expression among the Squid Game officials again.
In the short teaser, he seemed to be trying to eliminate the Squid Game itself and uncover those behind it. However, in this still, Gi-hun is depicted as if he has rejoined the Squid Game.
Squid Game Season 2 Still
However, his actions will be different from the previous season. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk said that while he was a character who passively showed altruism, his experience in Season 1 has transformed him into a more proactive individual.
Similar to Squid Game, "The Hunger Games" series shifted its focus in the latter part from the games themselves to a struggle to overthrow the system. Gi-hun's attempt to dismantle the Squid Game seems inevitable.
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk has stated in several interviews that he carefully selected the games that will appear in Squid Game Season 2. Regardless of the path Gi-hun takes, it is almost certain that the Squid Game will be held once again. Im Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, and Yang Dong-geun will appear as new participants in the Squid Game.
The Front Man and the "Suit Man" will also return for the second season. Gong Yoo seems to be recruiting new participants again. Since Director Hwang Dong-hyuk has expressed a desire to delve deeper into Gong Yoo's character, we might get more insights into his background.
The Front Man, who had hidden his face in the previous season, is now revealed in the poster. He is still played by Lee Byung-hun, and his face is partially covered by a mask.
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk has revealed that he plans to explore the Front Man's story in more depth in Season 2. Therefore, he may also be portrayed as a more complex villain as the seasons progress. Notably, Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon), the Front Man's brother who appeared in the last season, has also confirmed his return.
Director Hwang compared the Front Man to Darth Vader in an interview with Entertainment Weekly last year. He was a past winner of the Squid Game but became the Front Man. Just like Anakin Skywalker, who was a brilliant Jedi but became the villain Darth Vader after enduring hardship.
This interview was a huge hint for English-speaking fans. Darth Vader tried to lure the protagonist and his son, Luke Skywalker, to the dark side in 'Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back'. If this hint from Director Hwang was intentional, Gi-hun may have the opportunity to become the new Front Man in Season 2. (Lee Jung-jae will soon be starring in a Star Wars Disney+ series.)
