Released in 2014, the ‘Destiny’ series has enjoyed consistent popularity for 10 years. Destiny 2 (DESTINY2), released in 2017, became the best-selling game of that year, and the 2022 expansion pack, ‘The Witch Queen,’ sold over 2 million copies in pre-orders alone.
The Destiny series is currently facing a crisis. Destiny has maintained a release schedule of one expansion pack per year, filling the gaps with smaller updates called ‘Seasons.’ However, ‘The Final Shape,’ the expansion pack that was supposed to be released in February this year, has been delayed until June. The seasonal content filling the gaps between expansions has already been exhausted. Moreover, the ‘Lightfall’ expansion pack released in February of last year did not receive positive reviews.
The Witch Queen, the most successful Destiny expansion
Amidst these challenges, Destiny 2’s concurrent Steam player count has reached its lowest point since the PC version's release. Destiny 2, which saw 300,000 concurrent Steam players in March of last year, is now hovering around 30,000. Bungie has implemented several measures to maintain player engagement until the release of The Final Shape.
Destiny 2 In-game Store
In the Destiny series, Bright Dust is an in-game currency used to purchase cosmetic items. The in-game store often sells cosmetic items that change the appearance of weapons and armor in exchange for Bright Dust.
The items available for purchase with Bright Dust change weekly, and players never know what will be offered, leading many to hoard Bright Dust. However, acquiring Bright Dust is not easy, as it's primarily obtained in small quantities through completing ‘grindy’ bounties from various NPCs each week.
Starting in March and continuing until just before the release of The Final Shape, Bungie will provide 700 Bright Dust weekly without requiring any quests. For players looking to stockpile Bright Dust, now is the time.

‘Wish’ quests, which allow players to choose one of several rare items upon completion of weekly assigned missions, are being released sequentially. The content of these quests themselves is, frankly, disappointing. The core of the quest involves replaying content from the 2018 expansion pack ‘Forsaken.’
The Dreaming City (from Forsaken)
However, the availability of hard-to-get rewards is a significant advantage. Destiny 2 has made obtaining new Exotic Armor increasingly difficult. Completing the higher difficulty versions of the ‘Lost Sector’ mini-dungeons hidden in open worlds ‘solo’ offers a low chance of receiving Exotic Armor. This process is not only difficult but also often results in players not receiving the desired Exotic Armor, even after numerous attempts.
The Wish quest allows players to select one Exotic Armor piece each week. Even if not Exotic Armor, players can choose gear that drops from the raid ‘Last Wish.’ Raids require six players to participate, but since the game doesn’t have automatic matchmaking, obtaining gear from them is extremely challenging without friends to play with.
Meanwhile, The Final Shape is the expansion pack that concludes the story that Destiny has been building since 2014. While not the end of Destiny itself, it seems like the majority of conflicts that began in 2014 will be resolved. Preparing for The Final Shape with Bright Dust and various Exotic Armor seems like a good idea.
